Period Shaming and India!

Period shaming is not something new in India. Through the generations, we have been taught that 'periods' or menstruation is something unclean and taboo. It is 2015, even today, the number of people who are comfortable with talking about menstruation are  negligible compared to the ones who accept it as a regular part of life.

However, if one notices the recent headlines, period shaming has been publicly supported by an elected representative of the people: a section of whom MENSTRUATE.

The phenomenon that is as natural as any other. To be clear, menstruation is simply the shedding of the uterine wall that has blood vessels preparing to receive the fertilized egg to nurture it into a foetus and gradually to a human infant. almost all female mammals menstruate.
But that is "impure" now. Is it? Sir, with all due respect, did you think about it when you were in your mother's womb nurturing yourself from that "impurity"? Did you find it " impure" when your own child was being nurtured in the "impure" chamber? I guess not.

The rising intolerance has spread its wings so wide that you now cannot tolerate the natural phenomenon that occurs after a girl becomes reproductively capable. You disrespect that.

Ever heard of the Kamakshya Temple of Assam? It WORSHIPS the menstruating Goddess. Yes. The very same Goddess that you worship. But maybe you shouldn't. Or maybe you should even ban the worshipping of the Kamakshya Goddess. Why? Well the answer is simple, because you are incapable of even respecting women who menstruate. Just like your mother did, your grandmother did, your wife and your sister might have too. And your daughter too will. You disrespect women by disrespecting this phenomenon that every uterus bearing woman has in common. With ALL DUE RESPECT: We do not do this of our own accord or for our own pleasure. We menstruate because we are reproductively able. Able of giving birth to a child who probably some day will be just like you raising the bar of intolerance. Or a child who will hopefully someday give women the respect they deserve.

With respect- Someone who menstruates every month.
