"Auroville is meant to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creed, all politics, and all nationalities. The purpose of Auroville is to realize human unity."
Amidst the corruption and disrupt in the world, this township will help you find tranquility. Auroville, inaugurated on February 28th, 1968, is an experimental township in Vilupurram, a district near Puducherry, Tamil Nadu. This township was established by Mira Alfassa (also known as "The Mother"), a spiritual collaborator of Sri Aurobindo.
Auroville, also known as 'the City of Dawn', incredibly has no concept of religion, money or politics! The township is a symbol of integrity among people dedicated to the ideal of human integrity. It believes in humanity before any caste or religion. The town is controlled by an assembly that comprises every adult living there and the most fascinating part lies in the fact that, they all hail from multiple backgrounds, cultures and countries, who at times fail to even understand each other (well, we could say somethings are better left unknown), yet beyond all lingual struggles there seems to be a close connections of their hearts and souls!
Matrimandir |
The hub of the town seems to be in a temple known as 'Matrimandir', where the symbols of the divine's answer to man's aspiration for perfection are found. The spiritual significance of the place is not confined to any section of religion, it is, in fact, belonging to humankind and it's mind.
Even though comparatively paltry in structure, it still has its own architecture, research institutions, restaurants, farms and even it's own e-mail network called auronet! Simply wow!
The very significance of writing this is to realise that in spite of the segregation created by man and religion, there is a definite solution to it, which is peace. In the true sense, Auroville is a symbol of the deeper understanding of humanity and integration of minds.
